Countdown to Jamboree

Walking Man

This afternoon was all about walking, waiting and then walking again.

After we got out of the arena show the scouts dispersed to the activity areas and visitor center.

The entire day I think I only ran into one group of four scouts from our troop. This place is spread out.

Some of the places are a 90 minute walk from our campsite. This is not a distance issue, for many scouts it is a timing issue - they have not mastered the art of judging the time needed to walk from point A to point B. It may take a couple long walks and some getting lost until they start appreciating it better.

Tonight's dinner was tacos with tortillas and chips and all the fixings. Scouts are getting a good handle on the "steam warming" process with Mr. Donart's guidance.

At meals we are joined by volunteer staff members that work the jamboree. To my total surprise our guest tonight was a Scout Leader and mentor from my own youth scout days back in New Jersey. I have not seen him in probably 25 years.

The thing some of the boys have learned about is "patch trading."  After dinner the scouts line the gravel walkway between the campsites to trade. They started with putting blankets down first and then putting patches on top. Then, the more savy scouts upgraded to putting their elevated cot out there.

Scouts are only to trade with scouts.  We also recommended that they only trade "one for one."  This avoids the issue with some scouts not following the Scout Law when trading patches.

The patch set below is one I traded for ( with another adult) for the Ocean County Council.

Wednesday the scouts all have their curriculum classes. Those are the 2-3 hour times that they signed up to do. So, they will be scattered around the jambo site again. It makes it hard to take photos. The back up plan on photos is breakfast and dinner campsite photos.

Good night to all from Mount Hope, WV

Scoutmaster Jon.
