George and Martha

After our Whitehouse stop we took a 30 minute drive to Mount Vernon.

By far, today was the warmest so far. Probably hit 90 with high humidity making it feel like 97. No big deal -right?  We are from Houston of course. Well, going from air conditioned car to air conditioned house or staying in the house or work all day is MUCH different than trudging around Mount Vernon in the heat outside.....

We toured the house and got some interesting facts about things.  Did you know they did not use the term front and back door?  Washington used "carriage house door" (front)  and "riverside" door (back) to avoid offending anyone by bringing them in the "back door."

We also asked the scouts about the first National Treasure movie. The dramatic scene where the president's party is crashed was filmed at Mount Vernon. The scouts were disappointed to learn there are not real tunnels there - just an entrance to the ice cellar.

We hung around until they pushed us out the door.  After that we boarded the bus for a buffet dinner. Then a night time tour of the mall.
